What is lip ratio?
The height of the upper vermilion, the pigmented part of the upper lip, divided by the height of the lower vermilion, measured at the midline.
How Facemap measures lip ratio
Facemap takes the vermilion border landmarks at rest and measures both heights vertically at the centre of the mouth, then reports the ratio.

Classical references cite roughly one to one and a half, upper to lower. Measured faces spread widely on either side of that.
How to read your result
The scan asks for a relaxed mouth, because pressing or smiling changes vermilion height immediately and makes readings incomparable.

Lower vermilion height against upper vermilion height. Landmark numbers are MediaPipe Face Landmarker indices, and every distance is normalised to your own face so camera distance and image size cancel out.

What the ideal lip ratio actually is
The most cited reference is 1 to 1.6, upper to lower, borrowed from the same classical tradition as the facial proportion. Measured faces spread widely either side of it, and ratios closer to even are common and read as balanced rather than deficient. Facemap reports your figure against the reference without scoring it.
Why expression ruins a lip measurement
Vermilion height changes the moment the mouth moves, so capture conditions matter more here than on any other measurement.
- Keep the mouth closed and relaxed, no smile
- Do not press the lips together or purse them
- Avoid scanning right after eating or drinking hot liquid
- Matte lip products are fine, heavy liner is not
Lip ratio in the context of the lower face
Lips sit inside the lower third, so read your lip ratio next to your facial thirds and gonial angle results. A lower third that reads heavy is often a length or jaw angle effect rather than a lip proportion effect, and the three tools together tell you which.
