What is eye spacing?
The intercanthal distance, from inner corner to inner corner, expressed as a ratio of palpebral fissure width, the horizontal length of one eye.

Wide set versus close set eyes
Wide-set eyes spread the upper face and often read as open and youthful. Close-set eyes concentrate it and often read as intense and focused. Both are extremely common, both appear throughout faces regarded as striking, and Facemap describes which one you measure as rather than grading it.
Why the ratio is more useful than millimetres
An absolute intercanthal distance in millimetres depends on your head size and on how far you sit from the camera. A ratio does not.

- Scale cancels out, so camera distance is irrelevant
- Results stay comparable between scans and between people

Eye spacing test: frequently asked questions
Do glasses affect the measurement?
Frames can obscure canthal landmarks. Remove glasses before scanning for a clean reading.
Is wide-set or close-set better?
Neither. Facemap measures you against yourself and does not rank faces.
What is a normal intercanthal distance?
Expressed as a ratio, most measurements sit between 0.95 and 1.10 eye widths. Absolute millimetre figures vary widely with head size and ancestry.
How do I know if my eyes are wide set?
A ratio above about 1.10 means the gap between your inner corners exceeds one eye width, which is the usual threshold for reading as wide set.
Does eye spacing change with age?
The bony intercanthal distance is essentially fixed after adolescence. Apparent changes come from eyelid and soft-tissue changes around the eye.
