Face shape is usually guessed from a mirror, which is unreliable because it ignores actual proportion. This free face shape test uses an AI face scan to measure jaw width, cheekbone width, forehead width and face length directly, then classifies the result.

What is face shape?
A classification built from four measurements: jaw width, cheekbone width, forehead width and total face length, compared against each other to sort the face into one of six common shape categories.
How Facemap measures face shape
Facemap locates the jaw corners, widest cheekbone points, forehead width at the temple line and the vertical span from hairline to chin from the 478-point mesh, then compares the ratios between these four values to assign a shape.
What the typical range looks like
No shape is more correct than another, and the classification is descriptive rather than evaluative. Oval, round, square, heart, diamond and oblong all occur naturally and in roughly comparable frequency across populations.
How to read your result
Facemap shows the underlying measurements alongside the label, so you can see, for example, whether a square classification comes from a wide jaw, a short face length, or both, rather than treating the label as the whole story.
The face shape formula: how we calculate it
Composite of length-to-width and cheek-to-jaw taper. Landmark numbers are MediaPipe Face Landmarker indices, and every distance is normalised to your own face so camera distance and image size cancel out.

Your reading is compared with that published reference on a Gaussian match curve: score = round( 100 x exp( -0.5 x ( (reading - target) / tolerance )^2 ) ), clamped to 1 to 99. Basis for the reference value: weighted blend chosen so oval reads highest and both very long and very square outlines fall away. The headline Attractiveness Score works differently: all readings are corrected for head angle and expression, weighted by confidence and mapped onto a 1 to 100 scale by a model calibrated against a published research set of more than Facemap scans.

Each shape category is derived from comparing these values against each other, not from a single width.

Why mirror guesses about face shape are unreliable
Lighting, hairstyle and camera angle all distort a visual guess. A slightly low camera exaggerates jaw width, and hair covering the temples hides true forehead width, which is why self-assessed face shape frequently disagrees with a measured result.
Face shape versus fWHR and gonial angle
Face shape is a categorical label built from four widths and a length, while fWHR and gonial angle are continuous measurements of specific proportions. Two faces can share a face shape label while differing meaningfully in fWHR or jaw angle, so the three tools are complementary rather than duplicates.
The face shape classification formula, step by step
Face shape is not read from a single width. The formula compares the width and length ratios below and assigns whichever category the pattern fits most closely.
- Divide jaw width by cheekbone width to check how much the jaw tapers
- Divide forehead width by cheekbone width to check how the top of the face compares
- Divide total face length by cheekbone width to check overall length versus width
- A near-equal jaw, cheekbone and forehead width with a longer length points to square or oblong
- A wide forehead or cheekbones with a narrow jaw points to heart or diamond
- Similar width and length with a soft jaw angle points to round, and a clearly longer length with tapering width points to oval
