Eye-axis inclination angle

Canthal tilt test: positive, neutral or negative canthal tilt

Canthal tilt is the inclination of the eye axis, the line drawn from the inner corner of the eye to the outer corner. This free canthal tilt calculator is an AI face scan that measures it in degrees for each eye and explains what positive, neutral and negative canthal tilt look like.

Free basic reports require no credit card, no account, no password. Your image is never uploaded or stored. Analysis happens in your browser and your session data is cleared when you close or refresh the page.

In short

Canthal tilt is the angle between your inner and outer eye corner, measured against the horizontal. Positive canthal tilt means the outer corner sits higher than the inner corner, negative means it sits lower. Most measured eyes fall between 0 and 8 degrees positive.

Where it is measured

Canthal tilt on the landmark mesh.

The overlay is drawn from the same 478 point MediaPipe landmark set Facemap uses on your own scan, so every caliper, axis and node sits on the exact anatomy the measurement is taken from.

Canthal tilt measured, normalised and explained.

01

What is canthal tilt?

The angle between the medial canthus, your inner eye corner, and the lateral canthus, your outer eye corner, measured against the horizontal. When the outer corner sits higher, the tilt is positive.

02

How Facemap measures canthal tilt

The mesh gives precise canthal landmarks in three dimensions. Facemap corrects for head roll using the facial midline, then reports the angle in degrees for the left and right eye separately.

03

What the typical range looks like

Most faces measure between roughly neutral and a few degrees positive. Larger positive angles read as alert and lifted, negative angles read as soft and downturned, and neither is a fault.

04

How to read your result

Because head tilt easily fakes this measurement, the roll correction matters more than the raw number. Facemap shows both eyes so you can see whether a difference is real structure or a capture artefact.

The canthal tilt formula: how we calculate it

Angle of the inner-to-outer eye corner axis, averaged left and right. Landmark numbers are MediaPipe Face Landmarker indices, and every distance is normalised to your own face so camera distance and image size cancel out.

Your reading is compared with that published reference on a Gaussian match curve: score = round( 100 x exp( -0.5 x ( (reading - target) / tolerance )^2 ) ), clamped to 1 to 99. Basis for the reference value: anthropometric norms for neutral to mildly positive canthal tilt. The headline Attractiveness Score works differently: all readings are corrected for head angle and expression, weighted by confidence and mapped onto a 1 to 100 scale by a model calibrated against a published research set of more than Facemap scans.

Canthal tilt reference table

Canthal tilt in degrees and how each band reads.

  • Above +8Strongly positive

    Distinctly lifted, almond eye shape

  • +4 to +8Positive

    The most commonly measured band

  • 0 to +4Neutral

    Near-level eye axis

  • Below 0Negative

Outer corner sits below the inner corner

06

Positive vs negative canthal tilt explained

The difference is direction, not quality. Positive canthal tilt raises the outer corner above the inner corner and tends to read as alert and lifted. Negative canthal tilt drops the outer corner below the inner corner and tends to read as soft, and it is common in faces widely considered striking. Neutral tilt sits within a degree or two of level.

07

What affects your canthal tilt measurement

Structure sets the baseline, but a handful of factors move the number scan to scan.

  • Head roll, corrected automatically by the midline fit
  • Camera height, which introduces perspective on the eye axis
  • Ancestry, which shifts typical ranges meaningfully
  • Age, as lateral canthal support gradually relaxes
  • Eyelid swelling from sleep, salt or allergy
08

Left and right eye differences

Facemap reports each eye separately because a one to two degree difference between sides is normal and a larger gap is worth seeing rather than averaging away. Read your canthal tilt alongside your facial symmetry score to tell a genuine structural difference from a capture artefact.

09

The canthal tilt formula, step by step

The calculator turns two eye corner landmarks into a single signed angle, positive above the horizontal and negative below it.

  • Locate the medial canthus and lateral canthus for each eye in 3D
  • Correct both points for head roll using the facial midline
  • Draw a line between the two corrected points
  • Measure its angle against the horizontal
  • Report the angle as positive if the outer corner sits higher, negative if it sits lower

Questions

Canthal tilt test: frequently asked questions

What is a normal canthal tilt in degrees?

Reported ranges cluster around neutral to roughly eight degrees positive, with meaningful variation across ancestry and age. Facemap gives your measured angle rather than a pass or fail.

Is positive canthal tilt better than negative?

No. Positive tilt reads as lifted and negative tilt reads as soft. Both appear across faces widely regarded as attractive, and Facemap does not rank them.

Can canthal tilt change?

It shifts slowly with age as tissue support changes. Day-to-day differences in a scan are almost always capture angle, which is why the capture step guides your position.

How do I measure canthal tilt at home?

A straight-on scan is far more reliable than a photo and a protractor, because the app corrects for head roll before it calculates the angle. Remove glasses and keep your chin level.

Does the canthal tilt test cost anything?

No. The basic canthal tilt reading is free and needs no credit card, account or password.

How is the canthal tilt formula calculated?

Facemap corrects your inner and outer eye corner landmarks for head roll, draws a line between them, and measures the signed angle against the horizontal, positive above level and negative below it.

Is the canthal tilt test an AI face scan?

Yes. It runs Google's MediaPipe Face Mesh machine learning model in your browser, placing 478 3D landmarks with nothing uploaded, so the angle comes from deterministic geometry rather than a guess.
