What is canthal tilt?
The angle between the medial canthus, your inner eye corner, and the lateral canthus, your outer eye corner, measured against the horizontal. When the outer corner sits higher, the tilt is positive.
How Facemap measures canthal tilt
The mesh gives precise canthal landmarks in three dimensions. Facemap corrects for head roll using the facial midline, then reports the angle in degrees for the left and right eye separately.
What the typical range looks like
Most faces measure between roughly neutral and a few degrees positive. Larger positive angles read as alert and lifted, negative angles read as soft and downturned, and neither is a fault.

The canthal tilt formula: how we calculate it
Angle of the inner-to-outer eye corner axis, averaged left and right. Landmark numbers are MediaPipe Face Landmarker indices, and every distance is normalised to your own face so camera distance and image size cancel out.

The difference is direction, not quality. Positive canthal tilt raises the outer corner above the inner corner and tends to read as alert and lifted. Negative canthal tilt drops the outer corner below the inner corner and tends to read as soft, and it is common in faces widely considered striking. Neutral tilt sits within a degree or two of level.
